Software Development for Melbourne Startups and SMEs
Coordinated from our Melbourne office at 251 Frontier Avenue, Aintree. Delivered by our Delhi NCR engineering team. $50–$100/hr blended, 4 to 6 hours of daily AEST overlap, AWS Sydney by default. 10,000+ farmers on one platform. 99.1% inventory accuracy on another. Verified outcomes.
We don't oversell. We don't claim certifications we don't hold. If we're not a fit, we'll tell you.
Built for Melbourne startups and SMEs
Hiring senior engineers in Melbourne is expensive and slow. Most startups and growing SMEs don't need a full local team — they need a small group of practitioners who can ship production software, fit into Australian working hours, and not require a year of cultural onboarding to understand the local compliance picture.
That's the engagement we run. Our Melbourne officeat 251 Frontier Avenue, Aintree is the local point of contact — discovery workshops, sprint demos, quarterly reviews, and the occasional coffee. Engineering delivery comes from our Delhi NCR centre, where we've been building production software since 2016. Our blended rate is $50–$100 AUD per hour, verified on our Clutch profile.
What we deliver on these engagements
Daily AEST/AEDT overlap
Delhi NCR runs IST (UTC+5:30). AEST is UTC+10, a 4.5-hour gap. AEDT (October to April) is UTC+11, so the gap is 5.5 hours. Daily standups, sprint reviews, and ad-hoc calls are scheduled inside the overlap window — within your working day.
MVP in 4–6 weeks. Production in 3–5 months.
A focused proof of concept ships in 4 to 6 weeks. A production-grade system — with sync, conflict resolution, compliance scaffolding, and deployment — typically takes 3 to 5 months. We scope against your workflow, not a generic estimate.
AWS Sydney by default
For Australian clients, we deploy to AWS Sydney (ap-southeast-2) by default. AWS Melbourne (ap-southeast-4) launched February 2023 and is available for Victorian government workloads and sovereignty-sensitive applications. Your data stays in the region you specify.
What we've built for clients of this shape
Sustainability Data Platform — East Africa
A US-based sustainability research organisation needed to collect cost-of-production and income data directly from coffee farmers in East Africa — bypassing intermediaries, working without reliable connectivity, and usable by people who'd never owned a smartphone. We built an offline-first PWA with IndexedDB persistence, custom Service Worker precaching, HDOP-filtered GPS capture, and a sync queue that drains on connectivity detection. Visual navigation uses family-member photos instead of text-based menus. Outcomes: 10,000+ smallholder farmers on the platform, zero data loss across deployments, sub-two-second load times on entry-level Android devices (1–2 GB RAM). Built over 8 months.
EUDR Compliance Platform — European Coffee Importer
A mid-sized European coffee importer sourcing from 40+ cooperatives across Latin America and Africa needed EUDR compliance built into their procurement workflow, not bolted on as a separate tool. We delivered an Odoo ERP implementation in 9 months with EUDR controls embedded throughout: Sentinel-2 NDVI verification against the 31 December 2020 baseline, offline-capable GPS plot capture with HDOP validation, due diligence statement generation, and a document-management module with automated expiry tracking. Verified outcomes: 94% supplier documentation coverage within 6 months, 60% faster sales cycles, 99.1% inventory accuracy (up from 87%), 70% reduction in manual data entry.
Portfolio Management Platform — TR Capital, India
TR Capital, an Indian portfolio management services firm, needed to handle the operational and regulatory complexity of managing client portfolios across Indian equity markets inside one purpose-built system. We built it as a React + Node.js + PostgreSQL web application over six months. The platform ingests trade data from the broker terminal via an extensible parser, handles corporate actions (splits, bonuses, dividends, mergers) with a preview-and-confirm pattern across affected portfolios, computes returns using actual transaction dates against benchmarks (Nifty 50, Nifty 500, Sensex), and generates client reports as formatted PDFs. Role-based access control, append-only audit logging, and decimal-precise arithmetic throughout.
“The pricing has been quite competitive, and the quality has been excellent so we got maximum value for money.”

Our stack for startup work
- Frontend. React, Next.js, React Native.
- Backend. Node.js, Python, Java, .NET.
- AI/ML. OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, LangChain, LlamaIndex, Pinecone, CrewAI, Hugging Face.
- Cloud. AWS Sydney (ap-southeast-2) or AWS Melbourne (ap-southeast-4) by default. Azure Australia East where the workload calls for it.
The stack list isn't where the engineering decision lives — it's the artefact of decisions made elsewhere. AI/ML choice depends on the use case, not the brand. OpenAI's GPT-4 / GPT-4o tend to be the default for general-purpose reasoning and tool use; Anthropic Claude wins on long-context document tasks; Hugging Face is the right answer when the workload needs an on-premises or VPC-isolated model.
Compliance and data governance
Our Australian engagements meet local regulatory requirements in writing.
Personal data is handled in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 and Australian Privacy Principle 8, which governs cross-border disclosure of personal information. The 2024 reforms to APP 8 strengthened accountability obligations for disclosures to overseas recipients; our data-handling agreements reflect the current requirements.
Infrastructure follows the ACSC Essential Eight maturity model (current version: November 2023) as the cybersecurity baseline. For clients with EU-facing operations, we apply GDPR data-handling requirements alongside the AU regime. User-facing interfaces target WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility. Application security follows the OWASP Top 10.
We don't claim certifications we don't hold. If a specific certification (ISO 27001, SOC 2, IRAP) is a hard requirement for your engagement, ask us — we'll be honest about whether we have it, can get it, or aren't a fit.
How we compare with hiring a Melbourne-local agency
A Melbourne-local agency makes sense ifyou need someone you can meet in person every week, your workload has secure-clearance requirements that exclude offshore delivery, or you're at a stage where co-location with engineering matters more than rate. There are good Melbourne agencies and we wouldn't pretend otherwise.
Brainstack makes sense ifyou want a Melbourne coordination office for the relationship and the meetings, but you don't want to pay Melbourne rates for production software delivery. Our $50–$100/hr blended rate is meaningfully below the Melbourne agency band. You get senior engineering practice at offshore rates, with local accountability for delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if you're not the right fit for our project?
We'll tell you in the 30-minute scoping call. We'd rather you land at a Melbourne-local agency or a different offshore partner than spend three months building something for the wrong fit. If we think someone else is the better choice for your engagement, we'll say so.
What's the typical engagement size for a Melbourne startup or SME?
Our minimum is $25,000 USD per project. Most startup and SME engagements sit between $50,000 and $200,000 over 3 to 6 months. Dedicated team arrangements typically run from one engineer ($8,000–$16,000/month) up to a 5-person squad ($40,000–$80,000/month), depending on seniority mix.
Can I get an MVP shipped in 6 weeks?
For a focused proof of concept with a defined feature set, yes — 4 to 6 weeks is our typical range. For a production-ready system with auth, billing, monitoring, and the things that turn a demo into a product, expect 3 to 5 months. We'll be honest with you at scoping which of those two you actually need.
Do you sign Australian-jurisdiction NDAs and IP agreements?
Yes. Australian-jurisdiction NDAs, MSAs, and SOWs are our default for AU clients. IP ownership and any residual rights are spelled out in each SOW — bring your requirements to scoping and we'll structure the agreement around them.
How does AEST/AEDT overlap work day-to-day?
Standups, sprint reviews, and ad-hoc calls are scheduled inside the daily overlap window during your AEST/AEDT working day. Slack and Teams are checked continuously during AU business hours. We don't make you wait until tomorrow for an answer that affects today's work.
What does $50–$100/hr blended actually include?
The blended rate covers a typical squad mix: an architect or senior engineer at the high end, mid-level engineers in the middle, and a QA or junior engineer at the lower end. It includes their time, project management, code review, deployment, and standard tooling. It does not include third-party SaaS subscriptions, cloud bills, or specialist consulting hours (security audit, penetration testing, legal review) — those get quoted separately.
Where is data stored — AWS Sydney or AWS Melbourne?
AWS Sydney (ap-southeast-2) by default. AWS Melbourne (ap-southeast-4) for Victorian government workloads or data-sovereignty-sensitive cases. Azure Australia East where the engagement calls for Microsoft tooling. We document the data-residency commitment in your MSA.
Can we start with one engineer and scale up?
Yes. Engagements can start with one engineer and scale up, or scale down once the heavy build phase ends. We don't lock you into headcount you don't need.
How does this compare with hiring a Melbourne-local agency?
Honestly, that depends on what you need. Short version: local agencies are better when proximity, clearance, or co-location matter. We're better when the rate band and niche depth matter more than physical proximity.
What if we already have a CTO and just need engineers?
Staff augmentation is built for that. Engineers integrate into your existing team, follow your sprint cadence, use your tools, and report to your tech lead. We handle their HR; you handle their work.
Are you a fit for pre-seed and seed-stage startups, or just funded SaaS?
Both, with caveats. Pre-seed teams typically need an MVP fast and a partner who can grow with them — we do that. Funded SaaS firms need engineering capacity that doesn't require six months of hiring — we do that too. Where we struggle is at the very early end where the engagement size is below our minimum, or where the team needs a pure technical co-founder rather than a delivery partner.
